Mother's Day

I am loving this portrait of me by Reagan.

She nailed it with what I would wish for!

one morning  last week when Aubryn was leaving for school.

This is Reagan's "favorite purple stripped tulip that is turning a little bit blue".  I took this in our yard and added the words.

Here are some moments from the day:
Woke up to Rylan's screaming and James' poopy diaper.
As I held Rylan to help calm him down he looked up at me and said, "Mom, you are growing a mustache."
Enjoyed cinnamon rolls from the ward fundraiser.
Loved the treasure box full of compliments and coupons from my kids!
Had a great dinner with Brian Saturday night (and Wesley too) While Brad tended.
Finished up the annual Kid Talk video most of the morning.
Brian gave me some pretty flowers and a thoughtful card.
While giving kids their baths before church Aubryn had a bloody nose.  I used a maxi pad to catch the blood.  It worked great!
Rylan asked me during sacrament meeting, "When I get baptized, will I still have you?"
Rylan also asked me, "When is it Mother's day for boys?"
I actually thought to myself during sacrament meeting, "I wonder how bad it would be to give my kids benadryl before church."
Reagan wrote in a card for me at church, "Hape Brthaye mom.  I men Ahpe Muthrs Daye."
Enjoyed a grilled hamburger with family.
When the day was almost over, Rylan said, "Tomorrow I don't have to do anything nice for you!"

Reagan and Brian were playing catch with the baseball and mitt yesterday.  Reagan threw the ball far to the left of Brian and pretty high.  Brian took a giant leap and reached far for it.  He caught it mid air!  Reagan said, "Wow, Dad!  That was like ballet!"
-
While playing catch Reagan caught the ball and it rolled out of his "mitten."
-
My friend was over and her van has some Ragnar stickers on the back.  Reagan said to me, "Look, Mom, her car has tattoos."
-
Rylan and his cousin, Clare, play really well together.  One time they had been playing horses for awhile and I overheard one of them ask the other, "Do you want to play humans?"
-
Overheard Reagan and Rylan getting ready for bed one night.  Reagan shouted, "SSHHHHHH!  I'M SAYING MY PRAYERS!"
-
Reagan is really particular about his clothes.  One day he had to wear his not so favorite pants because the others were in the wash.  They are cargo pants and he does not like to wear them.  He was crying and talking really fast, "I don't want to wear these!  They look like scout pants!  People are going to ask me, 'Are you a scout?' and I will say, 'No." and they will be like, 'Why are you wearing scout pants!?'  waaaa."
-
At Activity days we were playing Simon Says Draw.  One of the girls told us to draw a peace sign.  When we all showed each other our pictures Aubryn had drawn a "P sign".  It was a sign on a post with a P on it.
-
The day they shut down Boston to find the Marathon Bombers we decided to take our boys to lunch.  The restaurant had a T.V. playing the news.  The boys were asking lots of questions.  I told them that the pictures of the men were pictures of "bad guys" and the police were looking for them.
"What did they do?" they asked.
"They hurt a lot of people."  I responded.
Just a few days ago Rylan came to me while I was getting ready in the morning. "Mom, did they ever catch those bad guys in the restaurant?"
At first I wasn't sure what he was talking about.  He told me a little bit more and I remembered that day.  I told him, "Yes."
Then he had questions about where they found them and what happened.  He asked what the bad guys said.  I told him the police caught him and took him to jail.  I didn't tell him where they found him or that the other guy died.  I told him they were in big trouble.
He said, "I bet they found him in a bush.  I bet when the police were taking him away he was saying, 'Ahh noo!  I wish I hadn't made all those bad decisions!!'"
Later when he came downstairs he said to James in a baby voice, "They caught the bad guys at the restaurant!  I did not know that!"
-
Today after lunch the boys wanted ice cream.  I told them to take it in the backyard to eat.  I said, "And no crying, fighting, or screaming.  The neighbors are going to call the police and say something is going on at the Hawks' because there is so much screaming!"  [I am not exaggerating.  If Rylan was falling off the edge of the earth to his death or having his ball taken from him, he would sound THE SAME.]
Rylan asked, "Who's the Hawks?"
I said, "We are.  Our family."
Reagan said, "Yeah, because most of us have Hawks for a last name."
"Reagan, we all  have Hawks for a last name."  I said.
"No we don't.  Like, Ryaln's last name is Ander."  (that is Rylan's middle name)

Real Life

My kids often ask me if something they see on TV is real life or not.  This morning Rylan saw an ad for the Arthur cartoon.  It was an ad for a whole new weeks worth of episodes starting Monday!  Rylan asked me, "Is Monday in real life?"

Can I have an otter pop?

"Can I have an otter pop?  Can I have an otter pop?  Can I have an otter pop?"
I hear this ALL DAY LONG.  Yesterday morning I went in my room to nurse Wesley and the kids were in the backyard playing.  I heard Rylan come inside crying.  "Uhhhhhh.  Waaaaaa. Uhhhhhh".  He was walking around the house making those sounds that he is so good at.  I knew he was looking for me.  He came upstairs and noticed I was feeding the baby.  He knows he should not interrupt.  He pushed the door open just a tiny bit.  I could see his eyeball through the crack.  He whispered, "MOM. CAN I HAVE AN OTTER POP?"  While I fed the baby during that one feeding both Reagan and James came in my room and asked me for one also.  When I said, "after lunch." it was devastating!  Reagan's whole body expressed despair.  His shoulders slumped so low his hands almost hit the carpet.  James even pounded his fist on my chair and said, "Ah-eh pah!!"  What do they put in those things!?  NO more otter pops!

Honor Society

Brad qualified for and made the effort to apply for the Honor Society.  He had to get several teachers to fill out reference forms and also get referrals from four other adults that are not family.  He made it!  Good Job Brad!

My kids are always picking me these flowers and putting them in water on the table.  It is really sweet of them.  Check out this dandelion they picked from our yard!

Can a Dino do the Moonwalk?

Rylan and James were playing with dinosaurs.  I asked James what the name of his dinosaur was and he told me in his way that it was dinosaur.  Then Rylan says, "I know what my dinosaur's name is.  It is Michael Jackson."
"That's a funny name for a dinosaur."  I said.
"That's mean." Rylan replied.  "You're being mean to Michael Jackson."

Kids Say the Greatest Things

Not far from here there is a gym for kids called "The Peak".  Kids at our elementary school often go there on field trips.  I'm glad I knew that before Aubryn came home from school the other day so excited and told me, "We get to go on a field trip!  We are going to The Peep!"

-
Rylan was looking at a picture of me today when I was his age.  He was thinking and asked if that was the house that I lived in.  It was.  Then he asked, "Mom, how did you grow up so fast? [pause]  Like, it's taking me a long time."
-
Brian took the kids to the safe kids fair a few weeks ago and they all came home with bags of "stuff".  One thing was a Frisbee with the words, "Spot the Tot" on them.  Reagan began reading it slowly sounding out each word. "Spot the toot", he said.
-
Rylan had Kindergarten round up  a couple weeks ago!  We were asking him what they did when they took the kids into the classroom and the parents stayed in the meeting.  Rylan told me that the teacher asked the kids if they were potty trained.  He said all the kids raised their hands.  I asked if he raised his hand.  "No," he said.
"Why not?" I asked.  Apparently he did not know that meant that you wear underwear and use the bathroom.  So he told me, "Next time I go to that class and the teacher asks who is potty trained I will raise my hand."
-
I told Rylan he was smart that day he went to Kindergarten round up and asked, "How'd you get so smart?"
"I ate a smarty at Bradly's grandma's." (a neighbor)
-
Reagan recently had a cough and raspy voice.  Not long after Wesley began sounding the same way.  "Reagan, you got Wesley sick." I said. "You can't get close to him when you aren't feeling well.  Do you hear how he sounds just like you did?"
He responded, "That's just because he likes copying me."
-
Rylan, Reagan, and Aubryn gave talks and read scriptures in church on Sunday.  They got to stand up in front of everyone and talk into the microphone.  Rylan was really close to the mic and you could hear him breathing really well. On the way home I told them each that they had done a good job.  When I told Rylan he said, "Dat was my breaf."
